The Parthenon

Ominous yet glorious, the white-marbled Parthenon looms over Athens from atop the Acropolis. Tourists spend hours gaping at this architectural wonder of Greece's Golden Age, erected for the city's namesake and protector -- the goddess Athena. Built between 447-432 B.C., the Parthenon once housed a golden-ivory statue of the goddess. The statue has been missing since the first years of the Byzantine period.
