America's gambling capital expected huge crowds for year 2000 celebrations and had a police presence to match. When New Year's Eve arrived, though, only about half the predicted number of people turned out on the six-lane Las Vegas Strip.
The city still managed to mark the new year in its inimitable style. People took time out from the gambling tables and slot machines for some impromptu street celebrations. Police said they made 263 arrests.
Inside the casinos, entertainers such as Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler attracted audiences of patrons willing to spend more than $1,000 per ticket.
