Road and rail signalsDuring a July 1999 study, of the 27 federal highway divisions responding on the status of the work by agencies in their respective states, on average, 90 percent reported to the federal government that work is in progress or there is adequate preparation for Y2K. Slightly more than half of the 185 jurisdictions reported contingency planning work in progress. An independent assessment conducted from August - October 1999, found that the nation's four major freight railroads, whose traffic accounts for 86 percent of the industry's revenue, are ready for the date change. For passenger rail, Amtrak reports that it expects to operate normally in the Year 2000, having achieved Y2K readiness in business systems, ticketing and reservations systems, locomotives, cars and equipment, signaling equipment, and computerized dispatching systems. Similar readiness is being reported by commuter railroads. |
