'Justin, you have brain cancer'

By Madison Park, CNN

November 2010

See that pretty girl in the picture with me? Last night, at the Hope Lodge Gala I asked her to be my wife...she said YES!

Justin met Alicia at a concert in 2007. Alicia was a friend of his younger sister, Heather Anderson. Alicia and Justin were both bartenders who could relate to working the same late hours. They bonded over movies, barbecue and good wine.

As we were leaving the Gala, Alicia and I were approached by a stranger who said he had an early wedding gift for us. This stranger turned out to be Dr. Richard Deming, a Radiation Oncologist from Des Moines, IA. Dr. Deming had just won a 32" flat screen TV in a Raffle that evening, and you can probably guess what happened next. He gave us the TV! How cool is that!? I'm blown away by the kindness in his heart.

Dr. Richard Deming, medical director of the Mercy Cancer Center, has only one television. It was made in the 1980s. Clearly, Deming doesn't watch much TV.

As I type these words, I'm sitting in front of the fireplace of a beautiful log cabin in the Smoky Mountains, Tennessee.

I can proudly say that I climbed Clingmans Dome...The highest point in the Smokies! Not bad for a guy with brain cancer eh?

Justin does not realize there is a bigger mountain looming in his future.
