Remember that doctor who gave Alicia & I the TV after I spoke at the Hope Lodge Gala in Coralville back in November? His name was Dr. Deming, a radiation oncologist from Des Moines. Anyway, I woke up Thursday to an email and voicemail from him.
Dr. Deming is organizing a group of about 20 cancer survivors to go on a trek to Mount Everest base camp in Nepal this April. The trip is all expenses paid, and will last about a month. He said the group was in need of a brain cancer survivor/guitar player. He asked if I would like to join them! Alicia says I would be crazy if I didn't go. I agree.
Deming, who had been to Everest before, planned to take 14 cancer survivors to the base camp of Everest. The trip would take two weeks. Funds for the trip came through sponsors such as the American Cancer Society, Livestrong, Mercy Cancer Center, the World Tri, YMCA and the Iowa Clinic Foundation.
They married in a small church ceremony and held the reception at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, the last concert venue for Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson before they died in a plane crash. The Surf Ballroom was one of the first places Alicia and Justin hung out.
