Albert Gore Jr.

Money

graphic

He proposes raising the minimum wage by $1, making college tuition tax deductible up to $10,000 and allowing a 50 percent tax credit for child care expenses.

Education

graphic

Gore supports testing teachers to make sure they are qualified to be educators, hiring 1 million new teachers to curb the shortage and requiring all fourth and eighth graders to take national standardized tests in math and reading.

Crime

graphic

If elected, Gore vows to make stalking children on the Internet a federal crime, increase the penalties for people who commit crimes against children, require criminals to stay off drugs to get out of jail, spend more money on the court system and support a U.S. constitutional amendment to protect the rights of victims.

Environment

graphic

Gore wants to reduce America's reliance on imported oil, encourage new energy-efficient transportation technology and provide tax breaks and other financial incentives to develop clean, reliable sources of electricity. Consumers would get tax breaks for buying energy-efficient cars, houses and appliances.

George W. Bush

Money

graphic

If elected, Bush promises to create a $1 billion fund to help 650,000 poor families buy houses and to use the budget surplus to offer tax cuts. He supports raising the minimum wage by $1 but would leave the final decision to be made by states.

Education

graphic

Bush supports allowing religious institutions to have more involvement in after-school programs, promoting school safety, offering character education in schools, giving states more control over education and evaluating schools annually on student performance. He supports teaching abstinence as the focus of sex education.

Crime

graphic

Bush opposes gun control but vows to increase prosecution of illegal firearms dealers. He wants to divide the Immigration and Naturalization Service into two sections - one would enforce immigration laws and the other would process applications for citizenship.

International Policy

graphic

As president, Bush would increase spending for military readiness and start a new round of talks about increasing global trade. He supports including China and Taiwan in the World Trade Organization, which handles the rules of trade between nations.

Ralph Nader

Money

graphic

Nader supports raising the minimum wage by $2.35 to $7.50 a hour, increasing it to keep up with inflation but capping the increase at $10. He would also support providing universal health care and making it easier to create unions.

Crime

graphic

The Green Party candidate is in favor of abolishing the death penalty, banning some weapons and licensing all gun owners.

Environment

graphic

If elected, Nader would work toward banning all logging on public land, eliminating the loophole that allows sports utility vehicles to avoid fuel efficiency standards used for cars and labeling genetically-engineered foods.

International Policy

graphic

Nader would cut defense spending, remove missiles from high-alert status, prohibit the placement of more land-based missiles and push for a deadline for the destruction of all nuclear weapons.

Patrick Joseph Buchanan

Money

graphic

Buchanan says the minimum wage should increase, but hasn't stated by how much. He proposes limiting the amount of taxes the federal government can require and using any budget surplus for tax cuts for everyone.

Education

graphic

If elected, Buchanan would abolish the U.S. Department of Education, send its funding to local school districts and oppose efforts to start bilingual education systems in communities with large Hispanic populations. He supports teaching the Bible in schools and posting the Ten Commandments.

Courts

graphic

Buchanan believes the U.S. Supreme Court has "de-Christianized" America and supports reconfirming justices every eight years. He wants voters to be able to remove federal judges through recall elections.

Social issues and international policy

graphic

This candidate supports creating a Legion of Decency to monitor the entertainment industry, using military force to prevent illegal immigration along the country's southern border and sending troops abroad only when American interests are threatened and not to help other countries.
