Gas Prices: Filling up and fed up

May 1, 1996

AMAZING ... three-plus years after Mr. Clinton RAISED gas prices (Yes, taxes increase the price we pay!) by 4.5 percent, he's declaring war on gas prices! He must be upset that someone else is raising them now. This is nothing more than the same old "have it both ways" Clinton political opportunism.

I am a college student, I have little money and do a considerable amount of driving, yet I applaud the increase in the gas prices. It is not going to be an easy thing to do but I believe it is about time Americans start paying for the gas they use. As a nation we use more gas and pay less for it, not to mention that on average we drive bigger cars than most other nations paying more for their fuel.

I am certain of foul play in the drastic increases in gasoline prices. I am a college student in Connecticut and I simply cannot afford these exorbitant prices. Hopefully the federal investigation will yield significant price breaks for customers. ... Isn't the government supposed to provide a medium in which its citizens may prosper? I am glad that the federal government at least has its citizens' interests in mind.

Once again we are being held hostage by the big oil companies. Perhaps they do not want President Clinton in office much longer. ... With the possible rate cuts by the Fed and fixed petroleum prices, what better way to put in Bob Dole than to blame President Clinton for the possible runaway inflation and higher cost of living created by Big Oil, which is a distinct possibility if things remain the same. Remember what Big Oil did to Jimmy Carter, 20 percent interest rates.

It is unfortunate that this oil shortage has happened during an election year. The current soaring prices make it much more attractive to oil companies to dump as much oil as possible onto the market. If prices are restricted, this attractiveness vanishes, and oil is in short supply for a much longer time. ... These prices are an inconvenience for me, but I believe that the market will solve this problem much more cheaply than the government could.

The Justice Department has no business announcing its investigation before it does it. The Justice Department should investigate and prosecute. To announce this can only be for politics and intimidation. The Justice Department should limit its activity to enforcing the law.

I think it is time for the American people to come to terms with the fact that their president is not omnipotent and he can not control the price of everything in the country that has world-controlling factors. In Canada we pay 75-80 cents per litre for gasoline and our taxes are much higher than 4 cents per gallon.
