The secret lives of candidates
From cartoonist Brixton Doyle See more of his work ![]() Warp cartoonist Brixton Doyle has something to say, and ask. He writes: The gaggle of Democratic and Republican candidates for president is confounding. And their personalities and agendas even more so. One of these folks will be determining the course of our lives- so choose wisely grasshopper. What do we know about these people anyway? Beyond platitudes and sound bites and slick exteriors, who are they? What do they want? What floats their boat, or keeps them awake at night? They may not tell us, but we might fathom a guess. Give us your opinion.
Who's to blame?
Is it the candidates lack of candor and distinction or is the public's lack of vision and participation? Certainly 'Brixton' hits the nail on the head when he shows Fred Thompson resurrecting the past from Republican legend Ronald Reagan. But you've got to wonder if this nostalgic tack that recalls the pre-9/11 days is going to help or hurt any candidates who employ it? I for one am looking (rather desperately) for a candidate with some substance and character to lead us out of the miserable pit the current admin. has dragged us into for the past 7 years.
The Republicans all want to be Reagan (none of them want to be Bush - either Jr or Sr) and the Democrats try to channel Bill Clinton without the libido. Even the debates are style contests about who looked or acted most "presidential." Perhaps we are too far gone down the slippery slope of Paris Nicole Hilton-Smith to remember that soundbites and haircuts don't make a country great, and an American flag decal does not make you patriotic. We need a leader, yes. But we also need to demand of our leaders more substance and less style. More ability and less attitude. More wisdom and less "W".
Brixton touches upon an observation in our culture in American Politics that almost goes as far back as the Nixon Kennedy first debate for television. Image means everything.
It might be time to join the Whig party.
No offense to the artist but I look at this and think, “So what.” Not for the quality of the cartoon or the content of the message but for the candidates and the drama and BS surrounding the whole election.
Typically the run up to elections is a feeding frenzy but this time it seems crazier than ever. All the candidates, Red and Blue, got an early start, Oh goodie! now we can listen to them all harangue each other for longer. The media seems stupider than ever continuing to run with poll info on people who aren’t running. Everything is being politicized, — No Wait it’s bad to politicize certain things, depending of course on what things and who’s doing it. One side’s evil, the other is useless. Terrorists! Healthcare Immigration Iraq Pick your topic listen to the whole group of idiots on both sides and you’ll hear nothing. I’m writing in Mickey Mouse in 2008 |
