Iran/Iraq, take 1: Lucas Turnbloom
Three I-Report cartoonists tackled the same subject this week -- here's Lucas Turnbloom's take:

Is there anyone at this point who doesn't believe the Shiites in Iraq are being armed and encouraged by Ahmadinejad and the Iranian ayatollahs?! Great cartoon!!!
hmmm...that looks a lot like arafat (and i thought he was dead)...you sure you got the right insurgent??
This cartoon captures the issue clearly. There is ample evidence to support the notion that Iran is the source of weapons used by the Shiite militia. BTW, the art work is excellent.

This is my favourite of the three. It's subtle and it illustrates the complexities of the relationship between Iran and Iraq. In particular I like the focus on the fact that it is not "Al-Qaeda in Iraq" which is the prime mover behind the insurgency but the Shia groups in the oil-rich East of the country. Presumably these groups are funded in part by fellow members of the Shia branch of Islam in Iran. The tragedy being that it is the average Iraqi civilian whether Shia, Sunni or a member of a minority religious group in the country who are suffering.
I think the point of the cartoon is moot. It's not cleverly delivered at all, it's just obvious. I could post an image of a gorilla crapping daisies and label the monkey "Iran" and the daisies "Terrorism" and achieve the same effect with people commenting on how poingent my message is. It's a cartoon, it should be able to make you laugh at the irony of the situation it presents, not be pretensious.
