Inverse proportions
![]() From cartoonist Brixton Doyle: "Freshman Sen. Clinton voted to give that blank check for war powers to the President in the fall of 2002. To be fair, so did many others. But now in 2007, candidate Clinton, in a politically inviting atmosphere, decries the war as Bush's own. Which might have a truer ring if years hadn't passed (with many servicemens' lives lost in Iraq) before this hard line conveniently (and politically expediently) emerged from the Senator." What's good for the goose, is good for the gander!
What comes around, turns around! How did this happen to us?
I would hope the demos are smart enough to know a looser when they hear one. One Bush and one Clinton were enough, thank you.
Mrs. Clinton will have a lot of explaining to do over that war vote - just as Kerry did in '04. Hopefully she will parse it somewhat better than Kerry did, but I suspect it will haunt her in the months to come.
The amazing thing is that the GOP still loves to play the "you don't support the troops card" whenever ANY dissent for the escalation or current strategy is expressed. Even more amazing is how willing many of the Democrats are to accept that criticism.
The one change that would render the cartoon perfect would be to transpose the bottom two boxes.
Sen. Clinton didn't create a "Shock and Awe" campaign which shocked the American People and caused them to say "Awww" She didn't ignore her generals and send insufficient troops to do the job. She didn't squander the good will of the American Public after 9-11, nor imply to us that Iraq was a major player in 9-11.
What she did do is vote -- along with the Congress -- to give the President wartime powers. How the President handled those powers was entirely up to him and the mess that we're in now is the result of his own mismanagement. We should take the point a bit further. The mess we're in is actually the fault of the American People because we gave GWB presidental powers. Shame on us... |
