Pimp and whore

This is a new low for CNN. How much of a joke are you going to become? Since when do I turn to read CNN - for whom my respect seems to diminish daily - and find a pop-cultural reference such as WHORE - a disgusting misogynistic term - starting me down at an editorial cartoon? Think about that. That is unbelievable. Regan and OJ are publishing a book -- those are the facts. It is YOUR website that is now using the word WHORE in association with it. Unbelievable to see "pimp" and whore on your site. Unbelievable. Prostitute I can accept - whore, carries way too many violent, angry, misogynistic connotations that this cartoon to me has elicited a more offended reaction than reading about OJ's book. Sad thing is, I was really young when CNN came out and I have had such a respect for you. You're becoming classless and subtlely hateful along with the rest of the world.
I'm not typically one comment on my own visual work, but as the author of the satirical cartoon, "Pimp and Whore" and in answer to Kathryn Allison's post, I'd like to offer clarification.
The art and words are mine. When submitting it, I asked that CNN not be dissuaded from posting it due to the word "whore" and gave my reasons, which I'd like to expand upon here.
British art critic Edwin Mulins wrote a notable book some years ago entitled, "The Painted Witch- Female Body, Male Art" , featuring a declension of women regarded from best to worst in Western Art. At the top rank, above beloved mother, was the revered and exalted Virgin Mother. Occupying the lowly end of the scale, of course, was the despised prostitute. Mulins pointed out the hypocrisy of men castigating prostitutes for amorality, when it is they who desire, seek out and avail themselves of these women's services.
Ms. Allison is certainly correct that the word whore is "a disgusting and misogynistic term" and "carries way too many violent, angry, misogynistic connotations". It is my belief that no woman, including prostitutes, should ever have the vulgarity "whore" hurled at them. And it is exactly the reason why I used it to describe in caption (and attempted in drawing), not a woman, but Orenthal James Simpson. He's not a prostitute. He offers no desired service. He has not been hypocritically wronged. He seeks to profit from his wife's barbarous death by killing her all over again "hypothetically". Violent, angry, misogynistic? Seems to fit the deviant Simpson pretty well.
Amidst Ms. Alison's vitriol against CNN (and I'd dare say me now), she states oddly, dispassionately that all Regan and Simpson are doing is publishing a book. Really? Not a flyer, not a pamphlet, but a doorstop detailing how O.J. would have gone about killing the mother of his children, "if" he did it. Simpson's children are young adults now. I wonder what further trauma it will cause them to see in cold type how dad would have killed mom- "if" he did it? And lest we forget, there was a vibrant young man named Ronald Goldman who may have wanted to have and love children of his own, who never got the chance.
As for the "pimp" of the piece, the publisher Regan is now trying to outrun harsh criticism by spinning the publication of the book and her own interview of Simpson as not profit-driven but public service-minded. Documenting the offender's "confession" and staring down her own demons. Claiming she paid Simpson nothing and that she was told his profits would go to his children through a third party. Not likely. Convenient that those profits will attempt to circumvent the civil judgement against Simpson won by the Goldman and Brown families. As well, Regan curiously, but not surprisingly, says nothing of the destination of her own profits. As a former National Enquirer reporter and publisher of such propitious titles as "How to Make Love Like a Porn Star", not to mention having an affair with Bernard Kerik, despite his wife and two children, I find Regan's almost pious assertation of noble motivation suspect.
I understand Ms. Allison's offence at the term "whore". I hope I've explained what I think is it's apt use. But if Ms. Allison is really more offended, as she states, by the use of the word "whore" to describe a likely misogynistic, murderous, sociopath in a satirical cartoon than a vulgar, blood-monied book BY a likely misogynistic, murderous sociopath, then I'd posit that her priorities are somewhat out of line.

Kathryn Allison of Memphis TN said,
"You're becoming classless and subtlely hateful along with the rest of the world."
As a part of the rest of the world I consider myself included in your statement. To which I am glad to say Thank you. Thank you for the compliment -- I'd rather be a part of "your" rest of the world than a part of YOUR world.

Saying "pimp" and "whore," two perfectly correct and useful words of the English language is not classless. Bitching about it is.
In response to people offended by the word 'pimp' and 'whore',I would suggest these words have many meanings in implications in the English language, including, but not limited to, the obvious meanings refered to in the previous comments. LET us not forget the brutal and heinous murders of 2 people ... AND the people trying to profit from their vicious murders. That disgusts me far more than a choice of words.
Very well said, Mr. Doyle, in response to the opposition of the usage of the word "Whore". I think whore is a fine choice because of the mainstream terms we have now of "media whore" and "attention whore", movie critic "quote whores", and political "vote whores". The list goes on and on, but it all boils down to the bottom line: Their actions are a break away from common decency and morality for the sole purpose of monetary or some earthly gain. Basically being a whore. You could say "prostitute" for a less sinister word. I say no, labels exist for a reason. I would recommend use in the future, because we have many more whores where OJ came from.
Mr. Doyle is right on so many levels, I actually smelled clean air after reading his reponse. Contrary to a lot of misguided souls' opinions, OJ is not a hero. He's got the right to publish anyting he wants, but the rest of us have the right to call a stinker a stinker. He stinks to high heaven.
