Imus: 'I've apologized enough'
Talk radio host Don Imus says he has apologized enough for his on-air racial slur last week.

Has Don Imus apologized enough?
or View Results
People need to get over this thing. So he said some racist and sexist comments, big deal. Its not like he's the President, let it go he's just a talk show host.
Imus has apolgized more than as many times as he should. However, that doesn't mean he shouldn't suffer serious consequences for his comments.

"I'm sorry" isn't always enough. Just because someone apologizes, that doesn't mean they should be forgiven.
Some rappers use derogatory language against black women in the lyrics of their songs. Should Al Sharpton not also go after them and have all media ban the production of their music? What makes this group of individuals immune from prosecution by Al and his buddies?

Enough is enough. Don Imus made a mistake. He's apologized for it. Everyone seems to be overreacting. He should not be fired. Everyone deserves a second chance. Now let's move on.
what ever happened to freedom of speech you don`t have to like it but it is free.....I will never watch you again....
I guess freedom of speech and the right to be human is over. I think society is getting so sensitive, that if someone says something stuped off the cuff as he did, they are ready to nail that person to the cross. How about a little cheek turning and forgiveness. It was just a bloody joke. Get over it and quit you finger pointing.
I can understand the uproar over Imus' comments, but why should he be severely punished when other people and rap singers say the same thing. So the RuTger's team had their moment spoiled. Where is the uproar about those LaCross players who suffered for a year with false accusations? Oh. I forgot, the players were caucasian.
Yes, Imus has apologized enough. But the thing is, there shoudn't be a place for talk show hosts like him who bad-mouth in such a fashion day in and day out either on TV medium or on radio shows.
A worse offense than these racial slurrs is an apology not accepted.
i guess it's just a testament to the double standard the U.S. has adopted as a way of life. It is ok for this group to say this, or get away with that, but not this group. In order to achieve a society free of discrimination and racisim, we need to all adopt a "everyone is truly equal" policy.
I'd like this witch hunt to continue on to Rush Limbaugh and other talk show hosts who continually spew out derogatory remarks about people who don't follow their exact way of thinking. What Don Imus did, along with his good old boy sidekicks, was wrong. But I'm wondering where the outrage is for the rest of them. Politicians have gotten away with much worse and far less coverage.
It's not the fact that he has"apologized enough," but rather the quality of those apologies. He only seems to have apologized, not because he's truly sorry, but rather because there is such an outrage over what he's said. It seems to me that his apologies are not heartfelt. He's doing it because he feels like that will make it go away.
If I was Don Imus, I would probably say Im sorry once more to the girls on the team, they are the only ones who ever deserved his appology, no one else, and tell the rest of the world to stuff it, he owes no more than that.
Jackson and Sharpton and the rest needs to get back to their glass houses they are getting shattered!!
Haydee has said it all.
If Mr. Sharpton and his gang is NOT the pot calling the kettle black, then I don't know what is. Who is he to talk, for the many insults he has expressed on different issues over the years.
Imus should not have been fired; I personally will not watch MSNBC again!
Too bad, because I love it from 7 to 10 most nights.
At least eight companies pulled their ads from Imus' show: Staples, General Motors, Sprint Nextel, GlaxoSmithKline, Procter & Gamble, PetMed Express, American Express and Bigelow Tea. Let the public know who are the companies that have not pulled their ads so everyone will know where not to spend their money
Don Imus is symbolic of a larger epidemic that for the most part, goes undetected until there is a moronic overspill into the media.

Racism, sexual bias, ignorance of all kinds pollutes the better thinking, well intended people who would rather be educated about other cultures and ways of life as well as to possess a vision that transcends hatred and fear.

What is funny? Certainly not the sort of comments that devalue or would make another seem less, due to someone's flagrant stupidity.
It's to bad that Imus made his controversial remark. He has made every attempt to apologize. His career is probably over. Other than a few hurt feelings, nothing much has changed. Sharpton and Jackson continue doing what they do best, adding fuel to the fire.Perhaps they should get in touch with the three Duke students that have been put through hell because they were accused of raping a black women. Sharpton and Jackson were there to spew their hate towards the white race. Maybe its time that they apologize. They don't even have to mean it. These three young men would probably appreciate it.This race issue (gasp) goes both ways.
This has become so overblown it's ridiculous.
Resignation will be more than enough apology.
Enough, hmm, when is enough a enough...can I say I have had enough of people saying that the Black community has a double standard when it comes to using distastful verbiage toward one another...NOT ALL of Black America agree with the lyrics used by a small group of rappers and need I remind you that it is white executives who rake in the money made from this music...so is that enough!!! Enough money made still at the expense of "human beings" not just black people...Imus' statements were unprovoked....how did he (Imus) even arrive at the moment when his obvious limited vocabulary was not able to put together any other thought other than "Nappy Headed Hos" (it pains me to even write it)...so you tell me when is enough a enough...there is no double standard...especially when the "double standard cry" is to cover the "low standards which Imus spit out and represented."
It is absurb that such a big deal has been made about one remark. Don Imus did not break the law. This should not be a firing offense. Don't we still have Freedom of Speech? Or does this right only apply to certain groups? If the right to speak is restricted, where will it end?
As a young black female, Jesse Jackson & Al Sharpton NEVER represent how I feel. What Imus said was mean & insensitive - not racist. I've had far worse said & done to me that was truely racism & I refused to let it scar me for life. The only racism here is that Sharpton & Jackson are calling for Imus's dismissal because he's white. If Jackson & Sharpton truely want to do good for Black Americans, they should turn their attention to resolving black youth crime, removing rappers as "role models", etc. The only thing I'd like to hear them say publicly right now is an apology to the Duke Lacrosse players - but I suppose if they actually stopped stirring up racial tensions, they'd be out of a job - wait, isn't that the same reason they're giving for Imus to loose his job?!
Give me a break. He was obviously satirizing Hip-Hop culture. How is it that the same people that try to take Imus literally can appreciate Kurt Vonnegut's searing satire?
What is more disturbing to me is that this man has this sentiment in his heart. He's a public figure with a public forum. He shouldn't have the opportunity to broadcast hatred. Has he apologized enough? Yes. Should he be removed from the air waves? Yes.
This recent "Imus racial comments ... and reactions" incident says a lot about where we are as a society (i.e., lost in our own tangled web...). For example, anyone who watches prime time tv sees all kinds of sexual-, racial-, ethnic-, and many other types (e.g., age, weight, whatever) bias every single day, whether in the context of "comedy" or not. It's nice that this incident has raised consciousness about this kind of thing... but this conversation reveals more about how deluded people are about "social reality" than it does about how unfortunate it is that such insensitive language *and behavior* persists in so many public arenas.
enough already. the man said something stupid. he's sorry. is this worth wrecking a career over? If you don't like what he's got to say, turn him off. There are so many much more serious issues going on in this country. I've had enough of this!
Comedians like Carlos Mencia, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, the list goes on and on have been making racial slurs for years. Why are we all in an uproar over this!? Get over it people. Should he have said it? No, I don't agree with his comment. I am just so damn frustrated with people being complete hypocrites.
This country will never be able to get over racism because we can't ever seem to let it go. The reason things always become a "race issue" is because We make it such.
The only winners here are Imus, Jessie and Al Shapton. Jessie and Al will get their props and Imus will have a better paying job in 2 weeks/months. Blacks will still be living under genocide/institutionalize racism not gaining anything and the team's moment of glory is still tarnished.
Imus should not be fired. Bernard McQuirk, his mean, evil-tonged side kick should be fired; That man is responsible for this mess; Imus should have known better and put a muzzle on him long ago. Too bad, Imus. I'll miss you.
where's Al & the Rev Jessi when it comes to other peoples rights being violated like the boys from Duke falsely accused by OH A BLACK WOMAN
This is absolutely rediculous how blown out of proportion this has become. The fact that we have to tip toe around every little thing we say because it may offend someone is absurd. I have heard a lot worse in Hip Hop and Rap songs. Why aren't those people apologizing? Everyone makes mistakes, move on. Quit using this medium as a source of publicity.
I believe that Mr. Imus has apologized enough. People make mistakes and people move on. It's the ones like AL SHARPTON that likes the spotlight and who like to keep Racism stirred up...Most of the blacks and whites around the world have moved past the remarks and are focused on a better day! Get over it Sharpton!
He's on a NATIONAL show He should know better - Keep Apologizing Don!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am sick and tired of hearing about how wrong Don Imus is. Guess what everyone who is saying that Imus is a raceist or a biggot is doing the same thing they are accusing him of.First of all the Rutgers team is not made up of just African-American players. Every single person in America has in some way put down some person who was not like them. Imus did it on National Radio granted but he still did the same thing that everyone is guilty of. He has apoligized a countless number of times. He has agreed to meet with the team so that he can apologize to them. So I think that everyone needs to get off of the issue.
Enough already! Don Imus has admitted that he made a mistake. He made it, he is sorry and if he could he would take it back, but he can't. Don Imus has done much more good for people, such as the Imus Ranch, then most of his critics have ever done for anybody. He is a "hunorist", he takes shots at everybody. That's what makes his radio show so interesting. Who cars about the TV, who watches anyway, but radio, He certainly keeps my drive time shorter by his witty and sharp tongued remarks. He said the wrong thing, he is sorry, let's move on.
Well I guess Don is about to make four times his salary by joining satellite radio. I think one apology was enough. On any given day I hear worse walking threw the mall.
If Sharpton, Jackson, and the rest of their picket-sign sidekicks were long-time Imus listeners, I guarantee you they wouldn't have put more salt on the wound. Imus was a talk show host for decades, and his racial, sexist jokes are said almost everyday. He did this PURELY for entertainment purposes and no further. Okay, if S&J and their sidekicks gonna make a big fuss out of this, why aren't they going after the casts and directors for Saturday Night Live, Mad TV, and Comedy Central? Hey, they make pretty much the same remarks every time they're on as well.

PEOPLE.. Get over with it, stop being a bunch of crybabies, and take a chill pill. In fact, I didn't think he even had to apologize. But at least he had a common courtesy to speak with Sharpton, planned to meet the Rutgers Women's Team, and already spoke to other public figures. Besides, think of the GOOD things he has done, like raising millions of dollars for charity for the disabled, boosted the ratings for WFAN, MSNBC,CBS radio, and brought laughs to early risers going to work. Imus - you're the man!!
He has apologized. That is understood and I for one accept it. Who am I to judge the quality of his apology when I don't know him? However, a new topic is birthed: One argument that keeps coming up is how some rappers call some women "ho's" without penalty. When a rapper says he has "ho's" in many area codes, well... I'm pretty sure they are ho's or have ho'ish tendencies. But when a specific group of non-whorish women are the target, that is uncalled for. These are two unrelated issues (women/men of ill repute vs innocent targets), and rapping about or discussion of the former does not excuse libel of the latter.
I am so sick of the Al Sharptons of the world calling for blood when someone (not black) makes an error in judgement.
I won't celebrate Black History month until there is a Chinese History month, Hindu History month, Caucasion History month...I think I made my point here. I have also been looking thru the t.v. listings for C.E.T. - Caucasion Entertainment Televison...oh, I found B.E.T. Understand?
I think the things like Black History month, and B.E.T. does more to segregate in todays world than bring everyone together. Could you imagine the uproar if there was a station called Caucasion Entertainment T.V.?
I'm tired of hearing about how these young ladies are hurt, etc. Please please move on. Imus made the comment, he appologized, lost his position, it's over.
By the way...I am a person first and the colour of my skin happens to be a sweet golden brown...aka...black!
" Gordon said that, speaking "as an African-American man in this country, Don Imus violated our community"
Thats what a member of the CBS board of directors said,,So I assume he will now move to have all rap with those words in it removed from the air as well, since this is America and if its wrong for one, its wrong for all. When I woke this morning ,there was still a littlebit of the constitution and bill of rights left that bush hasn't burned.Do I like what he said,,NO. Does he have the right to say it,,YES
Sorry folks, but IMUS has got to go. He's been on air for 40 years, and this is not the first time this has happened. No Racists and/or Sexual remarks should be allowed on AIR, Television, and/or any Business/Corporate Environment. He knows he was wrong, now take your punishment like an ADULT. Besides, all of these Sponsors are pulling out from advertising on his Show, that in itself, sends a HUGE MESSAGE. MSNBC AND NBC listen to your audience (SPONSORS/VIEWERS) and TERMINATE HIM. Besides, if your an OWNER of a Business and you begin LOSING CLIENTS, because of someone's IGNORANCE, then you too would get rid of that person TOO! Anyone on AIR that does STUPID things like this should be BANNED from ever HOSTING SHOWS like this.
Just got the news that CBS is also firing Imus. While that action may be the "right thing to do," it is gross hypocrisy for the network to state that "the effect language has on our young people" is the one that "weighed most heavily on [their] minds as [they] made [their]decision." Anyone who believes that the firings were not primarily and most importantly market-driven is not only delusional, but is likely to be frighteningly susceptible to some of the scarier mind-bending tactics being used in public forums today.
Don Imus made a joke and it wasn't in good taste. He was wrong and apologized. Should he be reprimanded. Yes. Should he lose his job? Give me a break!
Like it or not, this is what he was paid for. People were well aware of his ability to piss entire groups of people off before this incident. Get over it.

The next generation is going to be overly-sensitive and take offense to everything. And clearly now there's no way to appease anyone by apologizing. Heaven forbid someone actually learn from their mistakes. What else can he do?
Don Imus is a joke. How could people have listened to this crochety old fart for so long and taken him seriously. Especially the way he smacked his gums against his mike each morning. Loathed the guy before. He just confirmed what a joke he is to the american public. Thank God CBS and NBC did the right thing. He doesn't deserve a voice. Let him go out and pay attention to his ranch!
Does it surpise anybody that MSNBC and CBS took the easy way out...instead of standing up to this non-sense? It's sad when our society is talking about some off-the-cuff remarks made by a shock-jock...rather than focusing on the "real" in-justice...when 3 Duke Students get wrongly accused of rape by a stripper - and they are wrongly prosecuted in the court of public opinion...by millions including those same black leaders (Sharpton and Jackson)...who didn't seem to remember to show up for the press conference when the charges were dropped. They are quick to judge but if I remember right - they are not perfect...anybody remember when Rev. Jesse Jackson referred to Jews and New York City by a derogatory name? He admitted he did something wrong and asked for foregiveness...geez...I guess for Jackson it is easier to ask for foregiveness than give it...
Worse things have been said about different groups of people by tons of other media figures. If they were white and he called them crackers, would he still be getting fired?
First of all I think that it's common sense not to say things like that on worldwide television. Even if you feel a certain way about something doesn't mean you have to shout it out to the whole world! Of course there are going to be feelings hurt and people all over the world arguing over how they feel about this situation. This type of thing will never be resolved!! Racism and Sexism will always be around because you have idiotic people out there who don't care about how others may feel about derogatory comments being said! They are trying to make this type of behavior a trend so thinking that no one will stand up against these type of things. I think when he (Imus) finally meet with the team then he's done apologizing! I don't think he should have lost his job because others have done the same thing over the airwaves and nothing has been done so why should he suffer the conseqences on behalf of everyone who's ever made a comment that degrades someone.
Yes we all have the freedom of speech but does that mean we are to use it to hurt each other. The comments that were made were wrong and inexcusable. Also what does "the rappers use this language all the time" have to do with this? Place this blame were it belongs.
So I find RAP offensive - They really should ban that - at the same time do something about Howard Stern.
Now let's move the hell on, and get over it.
With all he serious things happening in the world, This, is what you and the other networks choose to cover. YOU should apologize, this is not the news! This is disgusting and pandering, I'm no Imus fan but you've sunk lower than I thought you could.
Puhleeese! Imus says what he thinks and believes with a little humor and I believe this recent comment was innocent and typical of his style of communication. Let's give it a rest.......and I hope he is reemployed very soon........Best of luck Imus!!
Dianne, Florida
What a freaking joke of a double standard!!!! Hell will freeze over before you see Sharpton and Jackson go after the rap music industry. I would like to see what kind of music is in the iPods of the Rutger players. Sure what Imus said was not right, but man, it wasn't a crime!
There is too much going wrong with this country to be focusing so much attention on a bad joke. Don Imus is an idiot, but he has the constitutional right to say whatever he chooses to. If you dont agree with the person on the radio, change the station. Its that easy. Thats why there are little dials and or buttons on your radio. To change it.
And to top it off, there are so many insincere people out there acting as though they are offended. It was a joke. Perhaps bad and tasteless, but a joke none the less. Political correctness is for people with a general lack of testicular fortitude, and people like Sharpton do more to promote Racial tensions than any hack radio disc jockey. Maybe a full out race war is in order...the race of real honest people against the pretentious P.C. lunatics....
I think people are failing to see the real reason why Imus was fired. Sure, the core of the reason goes back to the comment he made, but people need to understand that this was more about money than anything. Imus pretty much lost all of his sponsors. Tv and radio can't broadcast without the money from the sponsors they have supporting the programming. This is why he got fired! If the sponsors had stuck by him, then Imus would STILL be on the air. As for the issue, it seems like there is a serious problem with the double standard in this country. I also think Imus has a right to have freedom of speech. Apparently the constitution doesn't apply to everybody. Imus has always had this type of banter on his show. I think his firing is more a reflection of the times and the direction this country is going in, than anything else.
it is always not a big deal everytime the comment made is about blacks, hispanic or any other ethnic group, why is that, don't these ethnic groups count as human being and are entitle to all the same respect as all other races deserve. Enought is enought what this man did was wrong and just like everyone else in this world he should pay the consequences of his actions.Stop put in this invisible wall between us we are all equal and equally we should be treated.
Skin color should not play a role in determining if a group of words is inappropriate. If Sharpton really wanted to draw attention and earn my respect he should go after everyone who uses those words.
I think the best thing we could do is make a law that does not allow people to talk anymore. Someone is always going to say something and someone is always going to be offended. So if we all stop talking all together the problem is solved.
Imus has apologized enough. His apology is meaningless as the damage and hurt can not be undone. Adults must all think before we speak as words are forever.
Ridiculous that we are wasting our time over this type of nonsense. A comment made by a human. Utterly freakin' ridiculous. Are there no better topics for the Reverend Al to get involed with? Now that IMUS has apologized what has been resolved? I hope I see Reverend Al looking to get rappers ousted who use this same type of terminology to refer to women. That'll never happen!! Oh well.
IMan will be missed.Come back soon !
keisha washington, you said it best on this blog.thanks
It is kinda ridculous, he really didn't say anything that bad, and only used the words after someone else on his show and already used them. But, if Isaiah Washington can be fired and Michael Richards can lose his career, and Mel Gibson can catch alot of flak for what he said, why not Imus? It's political correctness run amuk, and nobody is immune. It's ridiculous but seeing as we can't control it, we apparently, are going to have to live with it.
The coach for the team was right Mr. Imus shouldn't of lost his job. What bothers me is that Al Sharpton is quick to make an incident a racial issue instead of fighting for unity,he insist on making everything a black and white thing. Mr. Sharpton needs to get a life for himself.
Wow Im not surprised by the comments I read, "No big deal, and move on". What Imus said revealed the state of America. We do not deal with things anymore; Im sorry move on is not enough. What he said was not only to the basketball team, it was to every African American women that heard the comment, he did not say it because of the team, he said it because of what they looked like and the group they are representing "black females". People do not want to admit it, but this county still has a problem with racism, so lets deal with that and not pretend that its not there, it is and Imus made it very obvious. Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks
Five points about this situation and Don Imus.

1. If the powers that be at CBS and MSNBC really believed that was Imus said was worth firing they would have done so on the spot. They would not have waited for the public to tell them it was the right or wrong thing to do. We should do what's right regardless of who is watching and commenting.

2. I think it's ridiculos to suggest that people chose to listen to the remarks made by rappers and comedians vs. the public airways. We also chose to turn on the tv, and specific channels. To suggest we buy into negative hip-hop culture etc is nuts. It's all around us and tough to avoid. The bigger issue is not what being bought but what is being sold in the first place.

3. Imus firing is payback for all the remarks he's made about key CBS and NBC staff, like Katie Couric, and the Today show staff, whom Imus routinely joked about. This is in someway their payback disquised as concern for the Rutgers womens basketball team.

4. As an African American male who has worked for over twenty years in collegiate athletics, I've heard both male and female athletes use this language and worse, and when the attempt is made to correct them, I'm called old, or old-fashion. They call themselves worse that Imus could ever call them.

5. It would be interesting to poll teams of men and women in athletics to learn how offended they really are by the things they see, hear and speak to one another.
this whole decision was based on money. sponsors canceled because they though they would lose money. the stations canceled because they were afraid they would lose viewers(ie money). i agree that imus needed to be reprimanded but he should not have lost his job. i have seen people of other minorities making comments that were inappropriate against other "races" yet nothing was done and nobody was punished. i will no longer watch msnbc or listen to cbs because they whimped out.
it's time that anyone who speaks inappropriately about others be punished. it's about time that inappropriate music be pulled off tv and radio. all races need to be punished for inappropriate behavior, not just caucasians.
A lot of other people lost their jobs because these women said their feelings were hurt. Big deal. He didn't slander them. Their careers and future are not going to suffer. I teach at a University and these current students need to get over themselves. They were educated to believe their self esteeme was the most important thing and they could do no wrong. Life is as easy as it will ever be for these college students. If they can't handle a stranger saying something about them, they are going to have a tough time out in the world.
Of course IMUS will survive this mishap and chances are he will become a better person for it. The questions should be whether or not we as a society will survive; how do we start loving and caring for each other; how do we seek reform in media, entertainment, and the personal lives of individuals as we relate to each other; how do we eradicate issues of racial and sexual divide that people like -Jane Addams, Rosa Parks, Billie Jean King, Susan Bromwell Anthony, William Du Bois, Mary McLeod Behtune, Gwendolyn Brooks, Harriet Tubman, John Brown, Carrie Lane Chapman Catt, Harriet Beecher Stowe, William Lloyd Garrison, Martin Luther King Jr., (Montague Francis) Ashley Montagu; etc. have fought for?
ONE apology should be enough. NO ONE should have to apologize over and over again. He should not have been fired either!
Come on! IF I do something wrong I appolgize and life goes on. People at CBS and MSNBC did wrong by firing him. They may have lost couple sponsors but I think they lost fans more importantly. I will not watch them anymore. I will watch where ever Imus goes.
THIS IS FOR THE cnn talking heads:
He said what he said, he apologised for what he said now get over it. I'm sick of hearing about the whole thing.
Freedom of speech comes with many obstacles, but Imus expressing an opinion on his own show should not have caused so much controversy. If Al would just take a look into the every day lives of kids in school, he should be outraged at what is said and worse - done, to students even if they are just a little different. Imus was just hosting his show. If they don't like it - don't listen to it.
Finish what you started Al Sharpton et al. Go after the artists who degrade women just as blatently and erroneously as Don Imus did. These musicians are the real folks who influence our young. Do it with as much vigor and energy as you put into destroying Don Imus' career, lest you be labelled a bigot for only speaking up when someone of the non-black persuassion commits a faux pas. The entire world is watching! I support you 100%.
Coach Stringer is a class act. She is a role great role model for all our daughters. She is truly a champion and a leader on and off the court.

I probably would have never heard of her had it not been for incredibly offensive comments by Mr. Imus. This speaks volumes about our society and what gets the media's attention.

Congratulations to Coach Stringer and the Women's basketball team from Rutgers. You have shown poise and maturity throughout this whole deal.
CNN obviously is an institution of contradiction and hypocrisy itself, when it posts the majority of comments in support of Imus and not an intelligent opposing opinion. THIS is how public opinion is swayed. Your tactics are manipulative and subversive to the so-called democracy in which we live. Censorship is alive and well at CNN.
Re: Don Imus; I never listened. This firing will however have far reaching consequences. Don will be fine. Others who spout similarly will not fare as well.
