'The Learn2 Guide: Burp a Baby, Carve a Turkey and 108 Other Things You Should Know How to Do'New reference book based on how-to Web site
June 11, 1999 (CNN) -- Oh, how times have changed. In the recent past, more often than not, Web sites acted as compliments to other more established projects or businesses, but that is no longer the case. A new book "The Learn2 Guide: Burp a Baby, Carve a Turkey and 108 Other Things You Should Know How to Do," is a entirely based on the content of a Web site. The site, learn2.com, holds a wealth of information on how to do everything from defrost a refrigerator to be a bride's maid. The animations and text are for the most part verbatim from the Web site. One difference is the Web site is not limited in space the way a book is, so some of the online "2torials" have a bit more information and more animations. The online site also allows the information to be layed out with related "2torials" listed on the page, which can be helpful. But for those times when you can't get to the Web, the book is a good alternative. Each 2torial has an introduction followed by step-by-step instructions for each task. There is also added information on the side of the page, such as how long a task will take and what equipment might be needed. We did a little research comparing the book 2torial on how to burp a baby to the Web version. It was exactly the same, with one important exception. In the book, the burping tutorial concludes saying after the baby is burped she "should be place on her side or stomach, to prevent choking on anything that might be spat up." But the Web site 2torial includes another paragraph following this advice which says, "If you decide to put your baby down to sleep after a feeding, research shows that if you place your baby on his or her back, you can decrease the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)." Since anyone who has fed infants knows they frequently fall asleep after eating, the Web site advice to make sure they were on their backs if going to sleep seemed like important added information that was not in the book. "The Learn 2 Guide," published by Villard Books, was edited by Jason Robert, the president of Panmedia Corporation, a new-media company based in Sausalito, California.
