(CNN) -- In 1960, writer John Steinbeck, author of the American classics "The Grapes of Wrath" and "Of Mice and Men", decided to drive across the United States in a truck and camper.
His purpose? To rediscover America; to find the spirit of his nation.
Along with him went Charley, his beloved standard blue poodle. Out of the trip came a book titled, appropriately, "Travels With Charley".
CNN's Larry Woods has set out to retrace Steinbeck's steps, comparing the America of Steinbeck and 1960 to the America of 1998.
Here's the first of his reports.
