From Harley dads to first-time fathers, a book for every tasteBy CNN Interactive Writer Jamie Allen Web posted on: Wednesday, June 17, 1998 5:24:40 PM EDT ATLANTA (CNN) -- Father's Day offers the perfect opportunity to get inside Dad's head -- by buying him a book. And there's plenty of titles lining book shelves, offering picks for Dads with different -- or difficult -- interests. We've selected several for your perusal. Whether you're buying for your own dad, or someone else's, you might find some bright ideas.
Standard father-fare
"Playing Through: Straight Talk on Hard Work, Big Dreams, and Adventures with Tiger" by Earl Woods, with Fred Mitchell -- For some, Father's Day wouldn't be complete without a book about golf. In this memoir, the father and mentor of golf superstar Tiger Woods shares the inspiring story of the Woods family, as well as his views on everything from Tiger's career to inner strength. "Daddies & Daughters" by Carmen Renee Berry and Lynn Barrington -- A girl first opens her heart to her father, becoming Daddy's little girl. This special relationship is explored through touching stories of love and rememberance in this book. "Questions for My Father: Finding the Man behind Your Dad" by Vincent Staniforth -- Want to get to know your dad better? "Questions for My Father" is a blueprint for uncovering the full dimensions of the man who plays one of the most important figures in your life. The book prompts fathers to tell their personal stories and to let children explore their own knowledge and understanding of their father.
"Fatherhood" by Bill Cosby -- The best-selling book by America's favorite -- and funniest -- father is available again in reissue. Bill Cosby spins a warm and humorous look at fatherhood, and the publishers have included a special card for "dear ol' dad."
Dad, the armchair adventurer"Reeling in Russia" by Fen Montaigne -- Give Dad an escape to another world with this adventure book in which journalist Fen Montaigne records his 1996 fly-fishing trek across 7,000 miles of back-country Russia. More than a fishing tale, "Reeling" explores the lives of the common people of Russia encountered along the way, and offers a unique perspective on the former Cold War enemy struggling with its future. "Harley Davidson - A Three-Dimensional Tribute to an American Icon" by Jerry Hatfield -- Speaking of adventure, get Dad's motor running with this mini-monument to the Harley. Even if Dad doesn't ride motorcycles, he might appreciate the idea of pretending like he's bad enough to do it -- if he wanted to. The pop-up book of Harley pictures also offers a history of America's favorite bike, from Knuckleheads to Fat Boys, which will make Dad sound like he knows what he's talking about in case he encounters a band of Hell's Angels.
For dads who want to be cool"Men's Wardrobe" by Kim Johnson Gross, Jeff Stone, Woody Hochswender, and David Bashaw -- Sick of seeing Dad walk out the door with two different colored socks, a gaudy tie, or just plain ol' bad taste displayed by his entire wardrobe? Help him, with "Men's Wardrobe", from the creators of the Chic Simple guides to modern day living. The book gives Dad smart tips on what to wear, whether he's lounging in pajamas on Saturday morning, or attending a black tie affair that night. "The Wine Avenger" by Willie Gluckstern -- If Dad's going to dress nice, he better know how to pick a good wine. "The Wine Avenger" rescues all those vintage-challenged fathers with easy-to-follow advice on the art of the grape. After reading this book, Dad will be able to impress any maitre d' by knowing the difference between a Merlot, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, or Syrah. And he'll impress Mom, too.
How to father, and father well
"The Expectant Father" by Armin A. Brott and Jennifer Ash, and "A Dad's Guide to the First Year" by Armin A. Brott -- For fathers soon expecting the ultimate gift -- a new member of the family -- "The Expectant Father" is his best friend. The guide tells soon-to-be dads how to deal with the life change, giving practical advice on everything from how to treat the expectant mother, to how to start a college fund. And when the baby is born, there's "A Dad's Guide to the First Year", a handbook on all aspects of fatherhood that examines the emotional and psychological developments of the new baby -- and the new father -- through the first 12 months.
"The Daddy Guide: Real Life Advice & Tips from over 250 Dads & Other Experts" by Kevin Nelson -- So you're buying a gift for a father, the type who goes on long trips, gets lost, and refuses to ask for directions? Picture "The Daddy Guide" as a map for the long trip known as life. Most new dads won't ask for it, but they'll definitely use it. The book is jam-packed with useful information on all aspects of the challenging and rewarding experience of fatherhood.
"101 Ways to Be a Special Dad" by Vicki Lansky -- Every dad wants to be special, and because of this, the competition to be a uniquely special dad is fierce. Give a father you know the head start against his competitors with this book from the author of the popular "101 Ways to Make Your Child Feel Special". The illustrated book shows dads how to enrich the parenting experience with thoughtful activities, creating special memories to last a lifetime.
