(CNN) -- He gave the world one of its most famous detectives in Sherlock Holmes, and he later became a champion and writer of books on spiritualism.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859. The British physician and writer penned several novels outside the detective vein, but he is best known for the Sherlock Holmes-Dr. Watson stories that began with "A Study in Scarlett" (1887).
The Holmes stories can be found in "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" (1891), "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" (1893), "The Hound of the Baskervilles (1903), and "Return of Sherlock Holmes" (1905).
One of Doyle's final books was "The History of Spiritualism," published in 1926.
Doyle died in 1930.
