London, England (CNN) - Classified military documents published on the WikiLeaks site increase the civilian death toll of the Iraq war by 15,000, anti-war activists said at a news conference Saturday.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange spoke at a press conference in London Saturday
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange spoke at a press conference in London Saturday

"We have seen that there are approximately 15,000 never previously documented or known cases of civilians who have been killed by violence in Iraq," WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Julian Assange said.

Those cases raise the civilian death toll in Iraq to 122,000, said Iraq Body Count, an-anti-war group.

Assange and others appeared at a news conference on Saturday in London, England, to discuss the release of nearly 400,000 classified military documents from the Iraq war by his whistle-blower website WikiLeaks.

Assange said the massive leak aims to reveal hidden truths about the Iraq war.

"The attack on the truth by war begins long before war starts and continues long after a war ends," Assange said.

"In our release of these 400,000 documents about the Iraq war, the intimate detail of that war from the U.S. perspective, we hope to correct some of that attack on the truth that occurred before the war, during the war and which has continued on since the war officially concluded."

CNN was offered access to the documents in advance of the release but declined because of conditions that were attached to accepting the material. The New York Times and The Guardian, the British newspaper, were among a handful of organizations provided early access to the papers. Read full story

Let me get this straight.... today, 400,000 documents were released and immediately, within hours, the anti war activists were able to determine an additional 15,000 Iraqi civilian deaths than previously reported !!!!!!

Amazing how quickly they can cross check, verify and validate the additional casualties!!!!!

These guys are simply analytical wizards!!!

The only thing these so called activists are doing is parroting what Assange tells them.....nothing more!!!!

Have they given up on the verification, confirmation and validation of information ???? .... Simply because it suits their own personal agenda!!!

ApostasyUSA   October 23rd, 2010 5:29 pm ET

Hey America. Quit playing the fool. We invaded a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 and the results are exactly what all experts at the time said would be the results.

Our 2 trillion dollar tax payer funded war for oil caused a leadership vacuum in Iraq. That vacuum was filled by people who like it or not, have their own interests in the region. Remember, this is Persia, and we aren't Persian.

Prepare for the Military Industrial Complex to endlessly throw all the blame at Iran in the wake of the leak of these documents. The MIC wants to change the subject from how useless and tragic the invasion of Iraq has been to how Iran should be the next country for invasion. With no enemies, the MIC becomes useless.

Wikileaks deserves major applause.

Mr. Assange is living on the run
and will be probably running for the rest of his natural life.
In disclosing US military secrets he’s created his own living hell.
Sooner or later something bad might happen to Mr. Assange, I would prefer if the Western Alliance/NATO make a conscious effort to keep this man alive. If he is to be prosecuted for leaking US military secrets let the record show the US Government did not seek a killing on Mr. Assange.

Let the courts and the laws decide on his fate and not the will of men.

morristhewise   October 23rd, 2010 11:26 pm ET

Dollars alone cannot buy peace, assorted dissidents, heretics, and revolutionists are constantly attempting to overthrow US installed Democratic governments. That is why the US military must maintain its presence infinitely to help keep the lights of freedom burning. Withdrawal would be a tragedy for thousands of America`s friends in Iraq and Afghanistan who would be forced to flee after years of loyal service.

thozz   October 24th, 2010 1:05 pm ET

Assange couldn't do more damage if he were an agent for the enemy.
...Wait a minute.......

Eric   October 24th, 2010 4:05 pm ET

If you read the article to the end: "The New York Times and The Guardian, the British newspaper, were among a handful of organizations provided early access to the papers." These papers had one month to go through these documents, according to other articles. That should allow for enough time to count the numbers ...

John A   October 24th, 2010 5:17 pm ET

Eric, you'll find Filipe doesn't care for reading facts.

Thozz, When revealing truth makes wikileaks an enemy, you know you must be supporting a very sinister US government.

But I guess you feel more comfortable eating your lunch in front of a TV which tell the lies you want to hear?

Smith in Oregon   October 24th, 2010 11:49 pm ET

When a tyrannical government cannot argue with the information posted which in this case is actual US and Pakistan Military documents, they attack the messenger.

Wikileaks has already saved numerous American and NATO soldiers lives in exposing that US Military commanders did not tell the helicopter pilots and flight crews that the Pakistani ISI had acquired heat seeking shoulder fired anti-aircraft missiles and gave those to the Taliban fighters. NOW thanks to Wikileaks US and NATO pilots are staying alive by changing their flight paths and carrying defense tools to offset that previously unspoken threat.

Wikileaks has already brought closure on NATO soldiers familys in Canada who were lied to about how their son's were killed in action. They were as the documents revealed killed by their own men!

As long as vital need to know information is not being shared to the US and NATO troops as well as the world at large, there is a prevailing need for a Wikileaks to post the truth, to reveal what is actually going on and saving many lives as they do.

While the US Military propaganda machine might act like they are laughing about not telling the US and NATO helicopter pilots and their flight crews that the Taliban had recently acquired heat seeking shoulder fired missiles, the multiple DEAD pilots, flight crews and dozens of passengers were not among those laughing.

Wikileaks exposed that utterly corrupt lapse of judgement by the US Military and SAVED PILOTS LIVES.

Wikileaks exposed numerous cases of fratricide where NATO soldiers were killed by their own troops, the military reports shows they knew it was fratricide and didn't do anything about it AND they lied to the KIA soldiers family's.

Wikileaks exposed that utterly corrupt lapse of judgement by the US and NATO Military commanders, helping to remove from the war zone those involved in those cases of fratricide and SAVED SOLDIERS LIVES that would have been shot in the back by those same individuals just as they had done previously.

The US Military Handing Saddam over to Iran on a silver platter is not anything remotely considered a win for the American people unless you are in the pocket of the Iranian government.

The US Military Handing Iraq's government over to Iran's hardliners to control vast areas of Iraq's government's decisions is not anything remotely considered a win for the American people unless you are in the pocket of the Iranian government.

The Republican administration of Bush-Cheney giving the Iraqi Oil field leases worth multiple Trillions of dollars to CHINA for pennies is not anything remotely considered a win for the American people unless you are in the pocket of the Chinese government.

Flooding the world with Heroin and greatly increasing the violence and murder rates as a result of the US Military guarding the CIA-Karzai clan's Opium-Poppy fields across Afghanistan is not anything remotely considered a win for the American people unless you are in the pocket of the Chinese Triad's or the Mexican Drug Cartel's.

Building a Trillion dollars worth of hundreds of extremely expensive US Military bases across Afghanistan which will soon be taken over by the Taliban and adopted by the Taliban in the years ahead is not anything remotely considered a win for the American people unless you are in the pocket of the Pakistan government.

The Republican administration of Bush-Cheney brokered Afghanistan's immense copper deposit leases to CHINA which bought those for pennys, that again is not anything remotely considered a win for the American people unless you are in the pocket of the Chinese government.

America's pockets are empty because of the empty headed actions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The US wanted a new government in Afghanistan since 1998, 3 years BEFORE 9/11. The official report from a meeting of the US government's Foreign Policy committee on February 12, 1998 confirms that the need for a "west-friendly government " was recognised long before 9/11:
"The U.S. Government's position is that we support multiple pipelines . . . The Unocal (GW Bush's biggest donator) pipeline is among those pipelines that would receive our support under that policy. While we do support the project, the U.S. Government has not, at this point, recognized any (existing) governing regime of the transit country Afghanistan, through which that pipeline would be routed. But we do support the project."

Apparently the need to access Central Asian natural gas reserves for profit was worth destroying the entire country of Afghanistan, obtaining the world's entire supply of Heroin was just a unexpected bonus.

The pipeline through Afghanistan is the overwhelming reason why so many Afghans (as well as American troops) have died. When will this ever be discussed instead of the "got-to-get-the-terrorists" BS that we have been fed by the shovel full by amateur BS artists like Pure Captialism?
Hamid Karzai was a top adviser to the American Unocal corporation, which was negotiating with the Taliban to construct a Central Asia Gas pipeline ($$$) from Turkmenistan through western Afghanistan. Earlier Karzai was a top contact for the CIA and maintained close relations with CIA Director William Casey and then V.P. GH Bush Sr.

Using the US Military to protect and guard the world's Opium-Heroin production across Afghanistan is a crime against all American's.

Using the US Military to prop up a petty CIA handpicked dictator in Afghanistan is a sad mis-justice against the people of Afghanistan and not worthy of the lives of the American soldiers.

The bumbling buffoons in the US Military Intelligence can't even figure out how to deal with fewer than 100 Al Qaeda members in all of Afghanistan even with 150,000 combat soldiers.

The Intelligence of using US Soldiers so that the CIA and Karzai can flood the world with Heroin is utterly evil.

American soldiers forcing yet another petty dictator (Hamid Karzai) on a third world country show's the world how un-intelligent US Military Intelligence is.

The CIA installed a petty dictator in Afghanistan whose links and ties to the world's largest criminal syndicate in the world (the Chinese Triad's) are widely alleged, whose own brother appears to have actively encouraged planting all 37 provinces across Afghanistan with Opium poppy's producing 99% of the world's total Heroin production AND that evil mix of morass wouldn't be in power flooding the world with Heroin if it were not for US Military propping them up with their machine gun's.

US Military Intelligence is nothing but a oxymoron where the only definition between DUMB and DUMBER is the number of bar's on your shoulder. American Taxpayers are suckered into paying for the US Military in Afghanistan, the utterly corrupt Karzai Government, the drug lords, the war lords, the Taliban to not attack the convoy's, the Pakistan Government who give those free Billions of taxpayer dollars to the Taliban and US Private contractors who give America taxpayer dollars to the Taliban fighters who they hire. This from people who swore to keep America safe! And the US Military Intelligence is begging for MORE TAXPAYER MONEY!

When American troops leave Afghanistan, the Taliban will return and eradicate the entire world's supply of Heroin greatly gutting that enormous funding to the Chinese Triad's and the Mexican Drug Cartel's who traffic that Heroin into America which fills America's city's with violence, street gangs and murder.

Wikileaks reams of US and Pakistan military documents, US Republican Senators and now the Wall Street Journal ALL are stating the same thing which neo-cons refuse to acknowledge. That the Pakistani ISI and the Taliban are working together to kill American soldiers in Afghanistan. Pretend all you want, facts are facts repeated by each those three sources which are independent and unbiased.

They indicate the US Military Intelligence were bungling fools, taken in by the Pakistani ISI playing them and helping the Taliban at the same time. American soldiers died, they died because the US Military Intelligence wasn't even intelligent enough to inform the US soldiers they had been played and used by the Pakistani ISI.

Neo-cons are proud of forcing a dictator on the Afghanistan people who view Hamid Karzai as more corrupt than the Taliban? Republican neo-cons and their Zionist masters are sick individuals!

Republican neo-cons are touting the grandeur of placing the world's largest exporter of Heroin to the entire world on the American taxpayer's payroll, giving him a high position of authority in the Karzai government and selling that as anything remotely as 'positive'.

Members of Pakistan's spy agency ISI are pressing Taliban field commanders to fight the U.S. and its allies in Afghanistan, U.S. officials and Afghan militants have told The Wall Street Journal, a development that undercuts a key element of the Pentagon's strategy for ending the war. I have repeatedly stated this for well over six months now. Wikileaks posted this thru reams of US and Pakistan military documents producing a firestorm of denials from the Pentagon and from various roaches claiming to be US Military Intelligence and various bottom feeders claiming to have been in Afghanistan that swore the CIA and Pakistan's ISI were the good guys.

Yep, as expected the depraved Stars and Bar's wing-nuts started braying and foaming with their rabid say it isn't so brainless chants.
YES, as US Senators including the darling's of the Republican party have recently stated, the Pakistani ISI is helping, training, equipping and encouraging the Taliban Commanders to KILL AMERICAN TROOPS IN AFGHANISTAN. So much for the US Military Intelligent idiots!
With America CIA's extremely cozy decades running relationship with the Pakistani ISI, Isn't it time to openly question and for lawmakers to demand to know if the CIA has broken the very oaths they swore to uphold in regards to America? It appears wherever the Pakistani ISI went, so did America's CIA, both appear to have gone rogue and south.

It is simply false propaganda to portray the millions of ton's of US Military gear now available in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan's markets as 'stolen'. BS! The US Army has dumped ton's of gear, abandoned and sold many more ton's of gear, gave away millions of ton's of free American taxpayer provided US Military gear and hardware under the guise of supplying the local army's and police dept's.

It is all part of the huge US Military complex 'write off'. Getting rid of used and older US Military weapons, hardware and gear THEN stick the American taxpayers with the hyper-expensive bill for new upgraded replacements. Such callous and heartless US Military dump and demand new replacements has gone on for many decades. Give the American taxpayers a break! All of those armored personal carriers and Humvee's didn't just get stolen, they were dumped, left, abandoned and given away.

The same happened in Vietnam as that war wound down and US Military equipment was just abandoned and dumped on the roadside where the Vietnamese people happily seized free American taxpayer provided airplanes, tanks, jeeps, weapons, radios and all kinds of US Military hardware which they then sold to the highest bidders. I'd love to have been able to bid and buy a cobra helicopter or one of the thousands of Huey' Helicopter's that was simply abandoned but NO, such is strictly taboo for American's to bid on in America, travel to Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan or Pakistan and it's perfectly legal, pay some customs to bring it back and it's YOUR's.

Don't be fooled by the US Military reports of 'stolen' or 'lost' US Military Vehicles, Weapons and Hardware, that is simply the 'write off' used US Military equipment buzz words being spun by the US Military Complex. They'll soon be before the US Congress with their shiny brass bar's and star's demanding hundreds of Billions of additional free taxpayer dollars for the very newest upgraded equipment to replace it, just wait and see!

So,Julain Assange wants to police goverments and companies activities, but who will police him?At least it didnt take a leak to tell the world that he may be a rapist!!! Big Looool.

John A   October 25th, 2010 11:16 am ET

dady bokana,

If Julain Assange supported America's lies he would be awarded a medal and probably given his own TV news network.

For telling the truth, Julain Assange gets accused in a silly way that wont stand up in court and then he's labeled a public enemy.

This situation defines America better than any thing. The truth is the enemy of America.

Filipe   October 26th, 2010 9:21 pm ET

John A,

SInce both and Eric failed to comprehend the details of the article..... It was unidentified "anti-war activists" parroting Julian Assange's claim of 15,000 addtional Iraqi deaths............. It had nothing to do with ""The New York Times and The Guardian, the British newspaper", receiving advanced copies......

Duh!!!!

John A   October 28th, 2010 2:34 pm ET

Filipe,
They were referring to the time needed to check the validity of the information. Duh!!

It's been checked and now even the US military starts to admit wikileaks tells the truth. Duh!!

Filipe   October 31st, 2010 12:57 pm ET

John A,

Yes, Duh!!!!! Within hours It was unidentified anti-war activists" parroting Julian Assange's claim-– obiously without any abiltiy to validate or verify his claims.

The only admission your US military makes is the documents are accurate.......... has nothing to do with Assange telling the truth.....two completely different things!!!

Duh!!!

Filipe   October 31st, 2010 12:58 pm ET

Filipe,
The verification took one month. Duh!!
Can you read?Duh!!
Months are made of days, which are made of hours. Duh!!

Filipe   November 1st, 2010 3:45 pm ET

John A,

Do you have difficulty comprehending the English language??? Is this because you are an immigrant?

"Assange and others appeared at a news conference on Saturday in London, October 23."

......And within hours anti war activists were able to analyze, 400,000 documents and were able to determine an additional 15,000 Iraqi civilian deaths than previously reported !!!!!!

Where did the month come from???

Duh!!! Do you have a relativre named Homer??

John A   November 3rd, 2010 12:07 pm ET

Filipe If it were before 1913, I might have thought of living in America, but today people are FED up with US corruption (I know this will go over your head, but never mind). To make it simple for you I'm not American and would never want to be.

Moving on..

I can read and so can Eric. Your Homer Simpson reference suggest you get your info from cartoons.

Quoting Eric, "If you read the article to the end: "The New York Times and The Guardian, the British newspaper, were among a handful of organizations provided early access to the papers." These papers had one month to go through these documents, according to other articles. That should allow for enough time to count the numbers ...

Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

John A   November 3rd, 2010 12:09 pm ET

Also the US military have admitted the documents were leaked from their department!! The US military have therefore verified the documents!!

Filipe is your last name Duhh?

Filipe   November 5th, 2010 5:17 pm ET

John A,

Apparently you will never be able to comprehend my point.

It is of no importance who leaked the documents or from where they came........

My issue of amazement is how the "human rights activists" are nothing more than bunch of babbling parrots willing to disseminate anything they feel will further their agenda...... Ignoring the need or the desire to verify or validate the information.

But then, I see the same apparent disregard for validation or verification coming from you on a regular basis.

So why should I be surprised?

John A   November 8th, 2010 7:33 pm ET

Filipe,
The US military have admitted the documents were leaked from their department! What more do you want to verify??
You've lost the plot again!

Filipe   November 11th, 2010 1:36 pm ET

John A,

Apparently you will never be able to comprehend my point.

It is of no importance who leaked the documents or from where they came........

No one could have verified their accuracy (400,000 documents) in a matter of hours !!!

End of story!!

John A   November 24th, 2010 4:49 pm ET

Filipe cant read, End of story

William   December 2nd, 2010 8:55 am ET

Transparency would be the best way in revealing the truth behind these issue. These is an appeal to all media in the world, you will be a big help in monitoring of investigation & the prosecution of who have done the wrong. Is it Assange or the revealed?
