- Sentencing is scheduled in Norfolk, Virginia, for Robert Cassidy, who pleaded guilty in a plot to sell F-14 jet parts to Iran.
- Events are scheduled in Memphis, Tennessee, to commemorate Elvis Presley's birth on this date 64 years ago.
- Sentencing is scheduled in St. Charles, Missouri, for the man who injected his son with HIV-tainted blood in 1992, to avoid paying child support. He was convicted of first-degree assault on December 5. His child was diagnosed with full-blown AIDS in 1996.
- On Saturday, January 9, AFC and NFC divisional playoffs are to be held.
- On Sunday, January 10, the 25th annual People's Choice Awards are to be presented.

- In 1979, the French tanker Betelgeuse exploded at the Gulf Oil terminal at Bantry in Ireland, killing 50 people.
- In 1982, Spain agreed to end its blockade of Gibraltar in return for talks on the British colony's future.
- In 1995, Carlos Monzon, Argentina's greatest boxing champion, died in a car accident.
- In 1996, former French president Francois Mitterrand died of cancer at 79.
