  • In 1585, musician and composer Heinrich Schutz, the man considered by many to be the father of German music, was born in Kostritz, Saxony.

  • In 1871, the great fire of Chicago began. It eventually burned 3.5 square miles of the city at an estimated cost of $200 million and killed about 250 people.

  • In 1918, Sergeant Alvin C. York single-handedly killed 20 enemy soldiers and captured another 132, as well as 35 machine guns, when he was separated from his unit in the Argonne Forest of France.

  • In 1944, "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" debuted on CBS Radio. On October 3, 1952, the show jumped to ABC Television.
