Today is the scheduled date for Bosnian general
elections, as determined by the Dayton peace accords. Voting
for municipal officials has been postponed; no new date has
been set.
Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, began at sundown Friday.
It marks the start of a 10-day period of soul-searching
during which Jews believe God decides who will live and who
will die in the coming year. The period ends with Yom Kippur,
or Day of Atonement, when Jews fast and pray to God for
forgiveness.
The Arab League foreign ministers meet in Cairo, Egypt.
The current three-year United Auto Workers contracts expire,
covering about 385,000 Big Three autoworkers.

In 1986, President Reagan and his wife, Nancy, appeared
together on radio and television to appeal for a "national
crusade" against drug abuse.
In 1991, the government of South Africa, the African
National Congress and the Inkatha Freedom Party signed a
national peace pact.
In 1995, NATO
called a temporary halt to its aerial
pounding of Serb rebels while a U.S. envoy tried to clinch an
agreement on withdrawing the Serbs' big guns from around
Sarajevo.
