Fresh Cuts

Web posted on: Friday, June 05, 1998 7:25:32 PM EDT

New and notable recordings:

Gloria Estefan (Epic)

Disco meets salsa as Estefan returns to her '80s Miami Sound Machine, dance-heavy, tropical Latin style. Produced by husband Emilio, the album features remixed versions of five of the CD's tracks, including guest rapper Wyclef Jean's remix of "Don't Release Me."

"When We Were the New Boys"

Rod Stewart (Warner Bros.)

Following the 5 million-plus selling "Unplugged ... And Seated" album, Stewart delves into the '90s new wave with covers of Oasis' "Cigarettes And Alcohol," Primal Scream's "Rocks" and Skunk Anansie's "Weak."

Brian Wilson (Giant)

Wilson's first solo studio album in 10 years features collaborations with Jimmy Buffett, J.D. Souther and Carole Bayer Sager, whose new lyrics adorn "She Says That She Needs Me," a remake of the unissued 1964 track "Sheri She Needs Me." Wilson revisits his own history as well, with contemporary interpretations of "Keep An Eye On Summer" and "Let Him Run Wild."

"The BBC Sessions"

Jimi Hendrix (Experience Hendrix/MCA)

"Sessions," a two-CD compilation mostly cut in 1967 for sessions recorded at BBC's Radio 1, includes "Foxey Lady," "Hey Joe," "Fire," and "Day Tripper." Perhaps the most welcome inclusion for aficionados is Hendrix's impromptu rendition of Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love" from the live "Happening For Lulu" TV show in 1969.

"Angels With Dirty Faces"

Tricky (Island)

The self-styled trip-hop maverick returns to the morbid, abstract style of his signature 1995 album "Maxinquaye." Longtime collaborator Martina Topley-Bird, who has since gone her own way, is once again an integral part, while P.J. Harvey is featured on the first single "Broken Homes."

John Fogerty (Reprise)

Taped live at Warner Brothers' Burbank Studios in December, Fogerty follows the ten years in-the-making "Blue Moon Swamp" with an exuberant romp through solo and Creedence Clearwater Revival material.
