Pope says again he wants to visit Iraq.
October 24, 1999
From reporter Rula Amin BAGHDAD (CNN) -- A congregation of Iraqi Christians on Sunday celebrated the 21st anniversary of Pope John Paul II's pontificate at Baghdad's St. Georges Church -- and again heard an encouraging message from their spiritual leader. Along with a message of love and peace, the Iraqi worshippers were reminded by a Vatican ambassador that the Pope still wants to visit the Middle Eastern nation. "It's our gift to him to prepare the right environment to have his wish come true," said the papal nuncio.
But the chances that such a visit might take place in the near future remain uncertain. So far Baghdad has not extended an official welcome to the Pope, and Iraqi intellectuals have warned the Catholic Church that such a visit would not go smoothly if the Vatican continues "to side with the West." The Pope has expressed a desire to visit Iraq and make a pilgrimage to the southern city of Ur, believed to be the birthplace of Abraham.
A trip was to have taken place in early December, but plans were never confirmed. It was put on hold until Iraq officially welcomes the Pope. "We told them we welcome the team to discuss the program and all the logistics for the visit," said Nizar Hamdoon, Iraqi Foreign Minister. "The visit can't take place without agreeing on the logistics." The Vatican has accepted that, and a team will soon be coming to Baghdad to discuss the visit. But this is likely too late for a December visit. The Pope has worked to prevent hostilities in the Person Gulf region and consistently opposed an economic embargo. He has suggested that U.S. and British air attacks constitute aggression.
