Iraq's oil-for-food plan expiring; Iraq silent on extension

May 24, 1999
Web posted at: 5:50 a.m. EDT (0950 GMT)

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraq's agreement with the U.N. to sell oil to buy food and medicine expires on Monday without Iraq agreeing to an extension.

The U.N. allows Iraq to sell $5.2 billion worth of oil every six months -- a program that expires at midnight. The U.N. says it has not been officially notified whether Iraq will continue the program and Iraq's oil minister told reporters on Monday he had nothing to say on the issue.

Diplomats said they expected Iraq would eventually agree to an extension but may let the current phase go temporarily unrenewed in protest against sanctions which keep it from freely selling oil on world markets.
