U.S. planes fire on southern Iraqi 'no-fly' zone

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. warplanes fired on two Iraqi defense
sites in the southern "no-fly" zone about 4 a.m. EST (0900
GMT) Wednesday, according to the U.S. Central Command.
The strikes were part of Operation Southern Watch, which
enforces United Nations sanctions and restrictions south of
the 33rd parallel in Iraq, and were in response to Iraqi
provocations, U.S. military officials reported.
