WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. warplanes fired on two Iraqi defense sites in the southern "no-fly" zone about 4 a.m. EST (0900 GMT) Wednesday, according to the U.S. Central Command.

The strikes were part of Operation Southern Watch, which enforces United Nations sanctions and restrictions south of the 33rd parallel in Iraq, and were in response to Iraqi provocations, U.S. military officials reported.

More details to come.
