INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey (CNN) -- U.S. aircraft dropped two bombs and fired a missile at an Iraqi air defense site near the city of Mosul in Iraq's northern no-fly zone, U.S. Air Force officials said Monday.

A spokesman at the base said the jets patrolling the no-fly zone had been "painted" by radar from Iraqi sites.

He said the fighters then "acted in self defense" and "suppressed" a surface-to-air missile site.

Two F-15 fighters dropped precision bombs on the position and an F-16 fired one HARM missile, the spokesman said.

The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. Iraq time (2:45 a.m. EST).

It was not known if the bombs and missile struck their target.

The fighters returned to base unharmed.

In addition to that incident, officials said, there was a separate violation of the no-fly zone in the south on Monday, as well as several violations on Saturday.

However, no U.S. or British planes were in the area when those violations occurred, officials in the Pentagon, said.
