Ramadan in brief:

The Islamic holy month of Ramadan began on Saturday.

The holy period falls in the ninth month of the Muslim year, as prescribed in the Qur'an. It is the most sacred time of the Muslim year, observed by daily fasting from sunrise to sundown.

Ramadan begins with the sighting of the new moon. The exact date is determined by clerics in each country.

There are estimated to be more than 1 billion followers of Islam worldwide.
