Jordan's Hussein says his cancer is curable
July 28, 1998Web posted at: 2:41 p.m. EDT (1841 GMT) ROCHESTER, Minnesota (CNN) -- Jordan's King Hussein said Tuesday that he has been diagnosed with a cancerous lymphoma that is curable. "The doctors' diagnosis is lymphoma Type B cancer that responds very well to treatment, leading to full recovery," the king said. Hussein, 62, added that he had completed "the first phase of chemotherapy treatment, which will be six cycles in total, with a pause of three weeks between each cycle, each of which is four days long." "The doctors are optimistic for a full recovery, because I'm responding very well to treatment," he said, seeking to reassure his countrymen. His comments came in an interview conducted at the Mayo Clinic and transmitted by satellite for broadcast on state-run Jordanian TV. Hussein entered the clinic on July 14, saying he had been suffering spells of high fever.
'Feel much better'On Tuesday, the king said that he "feels much better." "My cancer is a new fight which I hope to win," the king said, adding that he had "the highest morale." "Cancer or not, if you need me, I will get on the first plane and I will come back to Amman," the king said, addressing the people of Jordan. "I am still here, you can be sure of that, I'm doing well, and I will soon overcome this illness," he said. Last year, the monarch had an operation on his prostate gland and had a swollen lymph gland removed. In January, he was treated in London for a bacterial infection which he said caused exhaustion and fevers. The king underwent surgery at the Mayo Clinic in 1992 to remove cancer from his ureter and left kidney. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
