Kidnapped Bert and Ernie free at last
WEIMAR, Germany (CNN) -- Bert and Ernie, the tangerine-and-yellow-skinned puppets who are addicted to their ABC's, were involved in a real Muppet caper recently. They were returned Thursday after being abducted in eastern Germany.
The Muppet buddies who live on Sesame Street were returned by the Weimar police after they were snatched from an exhibit case at the Efurt Garden Show January 29.
Puppet-nabberers knocked through a wall at the exhibit hall, where the duo was part of a tour of 36 original Muppet puppets. They were not harmed in the abduction.
Gerd Duwner, who is the voice of the German Ernie, appealed to the Muppet nabbers on German radio to return the American puppets.
Antenna Thueringen, a private radio station, said that it received an anonymous telephone offer Tuesday to return them and a middleman brought them to the station Wednesday. The Muppet-nabbers have not been identified nor has there motive been revealed.
Bert and Ernie were handmade by the Muppets late creator Jim Henson and are valued at around $125,000.
