Pontiff blesses millennium peace monument for Bethlehem

October 27, 1999
Web posted at: 7:20 p.m. EDT (2320 GMT)

VATICAN CITY -- The pope has blessed a new millennium monument made of chains that is to be shipped to Bethlehem in time for the marking of the turn of the century.

The sculpture, "2000 and Beyond," is 19.8 feet (6 meters) high and weighs 7 tons. The iron chains symbolize the world's various religions, with the common aim of peace.

Pope John Paul II blessed the monument Wednesday, before it left on its trip to Bethlehem. Once there, it will be installed on a road not far from the Church of the Nativity for the last Christmas Eve of the century.

Reuters contributed to this report.
