Yeltsin leaves Moscow's Central Clinical Hospital on Monday

MOSCOW (CNN) -- Russian President Boris Yeltsin left a Moscow hospital after two days of treatment for flu and a fever, Kremlin aides said Monday.

The Russian president went to his residence outside Moscow to recuperate after leaving Moscow's Central Clinical Hospital, the news agency Interfax reported. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Yakushkin told Interfax that Yeltsin's temperature was now normal.

His hospitalization Saturday was the latest in a long series of illnesses for Yeltsin, 68. It came as his government is in the midst of a growing conflict in Chechnya and reportedly plans to send envoys to several Islamic nations to explain its objectives in the largely Muslim region.

Russian ground forces invaded Chechnya two weeks ago and now control the northern third of the breakaway republic. They want to establish a security zone in Chechnya to prevent Muslim separatists from attacking neighboring regions in southern Russia.

Russian emissaries will travel to Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and other countries to explain that Russia's action is "not directed against Muslims," a Foreign Ministry source said.

Militants who invaded the southwestern region of Dagestan from Chechnya, for example, have said their aim was to set up an Islamic state in the region. The Russian government charges the militants are terrorists, backed by international supporters.

Islamic guerrillas twice invaded Dagestan this summer and are blamed by Moscow for a series of September apartment explosions in Russia that killed about 300 people.
