CORDOBA, Spain -- From modern legends to variations of ancient myths, animated films from across Europe competed recently in Spain for a unique prize: the Cartoon d'Or.

The honor, Europe's only animation prize, is widely seen as an opportunity for new artists and producers to launch their careers. And based on the quality of the competition, the animation industry is about to welcome some impressive new talent into its ranks.

CNN's Frida Ghitis takes a look.
