World Court throws out Yugoslav case against U.S., Spain

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (CNN) -- The U.N. World Court tossed out Yugoslavia's complaint against the United States and Spain Wednesday, saying it could not "exercise jurisdiction" in the case involving NATO airstrikes.
Yugoslavia had sued 10 nations in the World Court over NATO's bombing campaign against it, charging them with genocide.
Presiding Judge Christopher Weeramantry said that both the United States and Spain had opted out of a clause in the Genocide Convention that allowed any party to request a hearing in the World Court over disputes arising from the convention.
Earlier, the court had refused a Yugoslav request to issue an interim ruling to halt the bombing, now in its 71st day.
Belgrade claims the bombing violates international law.
A final ruling in the remaining eight cases could take years.
