Danish official calls trip 'hopeful sign'

Moscow (CNN) -- Finnish President Marrti Ahtisaari is hoping to accompany Russian special envoy Viktor Chernomyrdin to Belgrade Wednesday, according to Finnish officials.

Mr. Ahtisaari's plans will be announced after a meeting among the three international envoys on Kosovo - Russian representative Viktor Chernomyrdin, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott, and Finnish President Ahtisaari Tuesday in Bonn.

Niels Helveg Petersen, Danish Foreign Minister said the impending trip was "a hopeful sign." He said that when European ministers meet later this week, that session will present an opportunity to discuss Kosovo issues.

On the issue of civilian casualties, Petersen said they are regrettable, but that NATO airstrikes in Yugoslavia are necessary.

"I do believe airstrikes are working," Petersen said, when interviewed in Brussels, at NATO headquarters.

A poll in Denmark indicated wide support for the NATO airstrikes.

CNN Moscow Bureau Chief Jill Dougherty and correspondent Patricia Kelly in Brussels contributed to this report.
