KUKES, Albania (CNN) -- A Chilean journalist working near the Albanian border with Yugoslavia was critically wounded by a sniper on Thursday.
Abner Machuca, 29, a sound technician for Chilean National TV, was conducting interviews at the Morina border crossing just inside Albania when he was hit in the head by the sniper's bullet.
Machuca, who arrived in Albania on Wednesday, was working on a story about news coverage of the war in Kosovo and the resulting refugee crisis.
After the shooting, he was driven by car to a refugee camp 10 miles (16 km) away, then evacuated by helicopter to a hospital in Tirana where he was listed in critical condition and placed on a respirator -- the only one the hospital had.
The Committee to Protect Journalists was trying to make arrangements to have Machuca moved to Rome. Chilean National TV has been unable to reach doctors treating him.
