Baby elephant toots its own trunk -- for the best

BERLIN (CNN) -- A baby elephant made its debut before the cameras at Berlin's Friedrichsfelde Zoo on Tuesday.

The male calf, still unnamed, was born early Friday morning. It is the second African elephant to be born at the Berlin Zoo this year. "Matibi" arrived on January 15.

There is some danger of the mother turning around in her quarters and accidentally roughing up her offspring. But elephant keeper Matthias Otto said the pachyderm pup should be all right.

"The baby has a rather loud voice so that it can make itself heard when the mother lies on top of the baby, especially in the wild. Then they all scream like hell," he said.

In keeping up with an old tradition, Berliners will have the chance to suggest names for the baby elephant.
