WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. President Bill Clinton announced Wednesday that NATO air attacks against Serbian military targets were under way.
Clinton said the NATO mission had three goals: to show NATO's serious commitment to peace in Kosovo, to deter further attacks by Yugoslav government troops, and, if necessary, to degrade the Yugoslav armed forces.
CNN correspondent Brent Sadler reported at least three heavy explosions in Pristina, the capital of the Serbian province of Kosovo. He could not tell where exactly the blasts took place or what caused them, or whether any damage was caused.
He also reported hearing repeated sporadic mall arms fire. Pristina was steeped in "pitch black darkness," he said.
CNN correspondent Christiane Amanpour in Belgrade reported seeing two flashes in the night skies on the distant horizon, apparently outside the capital of Yugoslavia.
NATO Secretary-General Javier Solana said after the launch of the air attacks that "our (NATO) actions are directed against the repressive policy of Yugoslav leadership." He said NATO was not at war with the Yugoslav people.
