PRISTINA, Yugoslavia (CNN) -- CNN Correspondent Brent Sadler reports Wednesday that explosions and small arms fire could be heard in Pristina, the provincial capital of Kosovo, as a NATO air attack began against Serbian targets.

U.S. Defense Department officials confirmed to CNN that strikes against Yugoslavia were occurring. The first phase was made up primarily of cruise missiles.

Sadler reported hearing heavy explosions but could not tell where the blasts occurred.
