Newborn jaguar cubs meet public with wide-eyed wonder

BERLIN (CNN) -- Under the watchful eyes of its parents, a curious black jaguar cub took a few tentative steps down a tree trunk Tuesday to investigate all the commotion on the other side of his fence.

But curiosity turned to fear as cameras clicked and microphones closed in, and the cub scrambled to the relative safety of the treetop.

The cub and its two siblings were introduced to the public for the first time at the Berlin Zoo on Tuesday, just a little more than two months after their births.

Just like their parents, Jacki and Gaucho, the cubs have different looks -- one is black, the others are spotted. Mom and Dad have taken an active role in raising the infants -- a rarity for jaguars.

"The nice thing here is that these cubs are raised as a family," said the cubs' keeper, Heiner Kloes. "Jaguars are extreme loners and normally only spend the first few months with their mother."

Reuters contributed to this report.
