Bosnian Serb Genocide suspect to appear before U.N. courtDecember 7, 1998Web posted at: 6:08 a.m. EST (1108 GMT) THE HAGUE, Netherlands (CNN) -- General-Major Radislav Krstic, former Commander of the Drina Corps of the Bosnian Serb Army, will appear before the U.N. International War Crimes Tribunal Monday, according to the U.N. Prosecutor's Office. In his first court appearance, he will be asked to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty on each count in the indictment against him. U.N. troops detained Krstic last week in the U.S. sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina. His trial could begin as early as January. Kristic had held a senior position in the Bosnian Serb army, sitting on a Joint Military Commission chaired by the U.N. stabilization force. The commission links senior officers of the Bosnian Serb, Muslim and Croat military. His indictment had been issued by the War Crimes Prosecutor on October 30. The indictment alleges that, as one of the Tribunal's most-wanted men, he stood shoulder to shoulder with then-Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic as a key figure in the massacre of thousands of Bosnian Muslims in and around the supposedly UN-safe area of Srebrenica. A former eastern Bosnian enclave with a Muslim majority, Srebrenica remains one of the bloodiest locales of the 1992-1995 Bosnian War. Krstic is charged with five other counts, including crimes against humanity, all relating to events surrounding the fall of Srebrenica in 1995. The charges include complicity to commit genocide; extermination -- a crime against humanity; murder, a crime against humanity and a violation of the laws or customs of war; and persecutions. He is charged with regard to both personal involvement and in the commission of crimes and as a commander responsible for the actions of those under his authority. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
