ROME (CNN) -- Romano Prodi, ousted as Italy's left-center prime minister by a single no-confidence vote two weeks ago, says he wouldn't compromise to stay in power.

"When they ask ... for something that will change the nature of your government, you can't do it," Prodi told CNN in an interview with Rome Bureau Chief Gayle Young.

Prodi says his key accomplishment during 2 1/2 years in power was to whip Italy's economic sector into shape so that it could be one of the first countries to join the single European currency known as the euro.

Prodi also gives Young his views on the future of Italian politics and the country's role in European affairs.
