Background on first two
rounds of 1997 election:
- In the first round of the
presidential election on September 21, 1997, no candidate received the required 51% of the
vote to be elected president. As a result, the two candidates who received the most votes,
Vojislav SESELJ and Zoran LILIC, participated in a second round of balloting. In the
second round on October 5, 1997, Vojislav SESELJ received a majority of the vote, but
voter participation was below the 50% needed to elect a president.
- With the October 5 result, an
entirely new election was scheduled for December 7, 1997, as required by Serbia's election
law. Because no candidate received a majority of votes in the December 7 balloting,
a second round was required to elect the president. This round of balloting occurred
on December 21, 1997.

When was
the last presidential election?
- A presidential election was
last held on December 20, 1992.
