has a unicameral Parliament (Parlamentul) with 101 seats.

Description
of electoral structure:
- The president is
elected by secret vote by the members of the Parliament under the terms
of a constitutional amendment passed in July 2000. Prior to this amendment,
the president was elected by popular vote.
- All members of
the Parliament are elected by a system of proportional representation
in a nationwide constituency. At least 50% of registered voters must
participate in the election for the poll to be deemed valid.

Of Interest:
- The parliament
passed a constitutional amendment in July 2000 that gave the power to
elect the president to the parliament. Prior to this amendment, the
president was elected by popular vote.
- After parliament
could not come to a consensus to elect the president, President Lucinschi
signed a decree on December 31, 2000 to dissolve the parliament as of
January 12. He scheduled early elections for February 25, 2001. Parliamentary
elections had been expected in the spring of 2002.
- Due to announcement
of early elections, the campaign only lasted 45 days. The campaign period
in 1998 was 90 days. Document submission and registration timing were
also cut in half.
- The government
increased the threshold for party representation from 4% in 1998 to
6% for these elections.
- Petru Lucinschi's
presidential mandate expired on January 15, 2001. By a Constitutional
Court Ruling adopted in December 2000, Lucinschi shall be Acting President
until the parliament to be elected in February elects a new president.
