  • The office of the president of the Republic of Macedonia.*

*Note: Early elections have been called in order to seek a replacement for deceased President TRAJKOVSKI who died on February 26, 2004.

Description of government structure:
  • Chief of State: President Ljubco JORDANOVSKI*
  • Head of Government: Branko CRVENKOVSKI
  • Assembly: Macedonia has a unicameral Assembly (Sobraine) that consists of 120 seats.

*Note: Since the death of President TRAJKOVSKI, parliament speaker Ljubco JORDANOVSKI has been acting as the interim president.

Description of electoral system:
  • The President is elected by popular vote for a five-year term.
  • In the Assembly, 120 members are elected according to the proportional model, whereby the territory of the Republic of Macedonia is divided into 6 election districts determined by Law and each elects 20 members. All serve four-year terms.
Results from the presidential race (First Round):
  • Presidential candidate: Branko CRVENKOVSKI*
    Party: Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM)
    Number of valid votes: 385,347
    Percentage of valid votes: 42.47%

  • Presidential candidate: Sashko KEDEV*
    Party: Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization-Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (VMRO-DPMNE)
    Number of valid votes: 309,132
    Percentage of valid votes: 34.07%

  • Presidential candidate: Gzim OSTRENI
    Party: Democratic Union for Integration (DUI)
    Number of valid votes: 134,208
    Percentage of valid votes: 14.79%

  • Presidential andidate: Zidi XHELILI
    Party: Democratic Party of the Albanians (DPA)
    Number of valid votes: 78,714
    Percentage of valid votes: 8.67%

*Note: Candidates Branko CRVENKOVSKI and Sashko KEDEV will advance to the second round of elections on April 28, 2004.

When was the last election?
  • The last presidential election was held on November 14, 1999. In this election, Boris TRAJKOVSKI of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization-Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (VMRO-DPMNE) won the presidency with 52.4% of the votes.
Population and number of registered voters:
  • Population: 2,022,547 (Based on 2002 figures)
  • Number of registered voters: 1,695,103
Of interest:
  • Under the law, the presidential election is non-partisan; however, each of the candidates was supported by a political party.
  • One of the presidential candidates, Branko CRVENKOVSKI holds the office of Prime Minister of Macedonia.
