Description of government structure:
  • Parliament: Italy has a bicameral Parliament (Parlamento) consisting of the Senate with 315 seats and the Chamber of Deputies with 630 seats.
Description of electoral structure:
  • The president is elected to a seven-year term by an electoral college consisting of the members of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies in addition to 58 regional representatives.
  • In the Senate, 232 members (75%) are elected by simple majority vote and the remaining 83 members (25%) are elected by a system of proportional representation. Additional seats are reserved for former presidents and appointed life senators, currently consisting of nine members. All elected members serve five-year terms.
  • In the Chamber of Deputies, 475 members (75%) are elected by simple majority vote and the remaining 155 members (25%) are elected by a system of party-list proportional representation. All members serve five-year terms.
