Of Interest:
- The January 2000 election was
only the second presidential election in Finland to be completely based on direct popular
vote - the presidential election in 1994 was the first. In 1988, the presidential
election was partially conducted by direct popular vote and partially by an electoral
college. Prior to 1988 a popularly elected electoral college selected the president.
- There was a particularly strong
female presence in this election with four of the seven candidates being women. In
82 years of Independence, Finland had never had a female president.
