At stake in this Referendum:
  • Adoption of the euro to replace the Krone as Denmark's unit of currency

  • Head of Government: Prime Minister Poul Nyrup RASMUSSEN
  • Parliament: Denmark has a unicameral parliament (Folketing) with 179 seats.
Main provisions in this Referendum:
  • A majority of overall votes cast are required for the referendum to be adopted.
Results of the Referendum:
  • Number of Valid "No" Votes: 1,838,026
    Percent of Valid "No" Votes: 53.12%

  • Number of Valid "Yes" Votes: 1,621,937
    Percent of Valid "Yes" Votes: 46.88%
Population and number of registered voters:
  • Population: 5,336,394 (July 2000 est.)
  • Number of registered voters: 3,999,706
Of Interest:
  • The advocates of a 'No' vote express concern that programs such as the well-developed Danish welfare system will not be able to survive within the financial disciplines required by euro membership. The 'Yes' campaigners argue that the euro will offer economic stability and will allow Danes to influence economic decisions that currently affect the country.
  • Denmark has had four previous European Union related referendums since joining the EU in 1973.
