  • Assembly: Thailand currently has a bicameral National Assembly consisting of a Senate (Wuthisapha) with 200 members and a House of Representatives (Sapha Phuthaen Ratsadon) with 392 members.
  • *Note: The number of seats in the House of Representatives will be increased in this election from 392 to 500.
Description of electoral system:
  • The king is a hereditary monarch.
  • All 200 members of the Senate are elected by simple majority vote in multi-member constituencies to six-year terms.
  • In the House of Representatives, 400 members are elected by simple majority vote in single member constituencies and 100 members are elected via party lists. All members serve four-year terms.

  • In accordance with provisions in the Constitution of 1997, the number of seats on the House of Representatives increased in this election from 392 to 500.
  • This vote was the first election to the House of Representatives under the 1997 Constitution. It included 400 seats elected in single-member constituencies and 100 seats elected through a party-list system.
  • The March 4, 2000, election was Thailand's first election to the Senate. Prior to the Constitution of 1997, the king appointed all members of the Senate.
