  • Assembly: Kyrgyzstan has a bicameral Supreme Council (Zhogorku Kenesh) consisting of an Assembly of People's Representatives with 45 seats and a Legislative Assembly with 60 seats.
Description of electoral system:
  • The president is elected by popular vote for a five-year term.
  • All members of the Legislative Assembly are elected by absolute majority vote in single-member constituencies.
  • In the Assembly of People's Representatives, 30 members are elected by absolute majority vote in single-member constituencies and the remaining 15 members are selected on the basis of party-list representation.

Of Interest:
  • A new requirement that candidates pass a mandatory Kyrgyz language test sparked controversy. Seven of 19 potential candidates failed the examination.
  • President AKAYEV ran for a third term in office, although the Kyrgyz Constitution limits the president to two terms in office. The Constitutional Court ruled that AKAEV's first term legally began in 1995, since he ran unopposed in 1991.
