Description
of electoral system:
- The president is indirectly elected
by members of the Rajya Sabha, the Lok Sabha, and the state assemblies (Vidhan
Sabhas) for a five-year term.
- Members of the Rajya Sabha are
indirectly elected by the state assemblies using a single transferable vote (STV) system.
Up to twelve additional members are nominated by the President as representatives of
literature, science, art, and social services. Members of the Rajya Sabha serve for
six-year terms.
- Members of the Lok Sabha are
directly elected from 543 single-member constituencies by a first past the post (FPTP)
system to serve five-year terms.
