Description
of government structure:
- India has been an independent member of the
Commonwealth since August 15, 1947.
- India's bicameral parliament is composed of
the Rajya Sabha (Council of States) and the Lok Sabha (House of the People).
- The Rajya Sabha has, at most, 250
members serving six-year terms.
- Of these 250 members, up to 12 may be
appointed by the president and the remainder are elected by state and regional assemblies.
- The Lok Sabha has 545 members serving
five-year terms.
- Of these 545 members, 543 are directly elected
and two are nominated by the president to represent the Anglo-Indian community.
